“Run, run”: Spirit of the Marathon II Review

Here's (creepy) proof that I saw the movie. Woo!
Here’s (creepy) proof that I saw the movie. Woo!

I had the opportunity last Wednesday to see Spirit of the Marathon II, in theaters for one night only. First, let me say that the movie was great. It was really entertaining and made me want to run a marathon–which is definitely on the list of things I want to do in the near future. Little Rock Marathon 2014, anyone? Maybe? Anyway, the Engineer and I definitely were happy to have a date night, even if it was on a Wednesday. Made the rest of the week seem never-ending, but whatever. I digress.

When we walked into the movie auditorium, there were about 10 or so other lucky people. I knew right away that I was in good company because whispers of that morning’s run drifted through the theater: “Are you going to run tonight?” “Nah, I ran this morning.” I was beyond excited to be watching a movie with “my people.”

The movie chronicles two elites, two Americans, and three Italians running the Rome Marathon. I really loved listening to each runners’ story and couldn’t help but relate to them. Running truly is universal. My favorite runner in the movie was Domenico Anzini, a 73-year-old Italian who has run every Rome Marathon to date. He gave me hope that at any age, we can enjoy running and being fit. I want to be 70 and still running, tri-ing, yoga-ing, and so on. Heck , I want to be doing it at 80 and beyond. In his words, “Run, run.”

It was fun to see the elites’ stories and how much they are similar to you and me–not that I do two-a-day run workouts, am rail thin, or have a sponsorship. But they do run because they love it and feel that they’re making a difference.

All in all, I liked it better than the first movie because it interspersed the runners’ stories in with the Rome Marathon and the history of the marathon. I totally recommend it to any runner out there seeking to learn more about the way running can change lives and to gain motivation. Now I’m going to run a marathon . . . for real. Anyone want to join me?

Workouts and French Fries

So last week’s workouts were awesome. I definitely feel more fit and focused–which is exactly how I’ve wanted to feel for a long time.

Sunday: Off

Monday: Easy run on the treadmill for 2.55 miles. I’m liking the whole “don’t push yourself too hard during workouts that aren’t intervals or tempo runs” thing. (Haha, you know what I mean!)

Tuesday: AM—My first spin class! I was feeling a bit wonky because I only had room temp water to drink, but it was definitely a great workout. I really like spin. PM—Yoga. Loved it as always. It’s nice to feel flexible. 🙂 Then I walked home about .6 miles.

Wednesday: Some crunches. I fully intended to do 30-Day Shred, but obviously that didn’t happen. I think I needed a rest from Monday’s and Tuesday’s workouts.

Thursday: I didn’t wake up early enough to run before work, so I took a yoga class in the evening and followed it up with 3.5 miles of running. I did a “Run through Germany” program on the treadmill (super high-tech one), and it was kind of hard and fun. Then I walked home.

Friday: Rest.

Saturday: Swimming lessons! I’m not as terrible at freestyle as I thought. I suck at breast stroke (I’d never done it before). Swimming was really fun, actually, and I look forward to more time in the pool. Swimming lessons were an hour, then I swam some laps after for about 20-30 minutes. Good stuff.

I also had some delicious french fries on Saturday at a local burger place called JCW’s. They might be worth a “Search” post soon. I need to find more great places. Any suggestions?

Nestle 5k Fun Run Recap

It’s actually been awhile since I’ve run a 5k, and, I have to say, I had a blast. AND I pretty much nailed a PR–(29:51) according to my Garmin since I started way in the back and there was only gun time. Haha, if you just go by the gun time, I’m about 45 seconds slower (31:30) than my PR in 2007 (30:46). But I think I’ll count it, eh? Okay, fine. I’ll wait until I have an “official” PR. Technicality.

Anyway, I felt great the whole race. I couldn’t believe how easy it felt to run decently hard (for me). So I guess since it felt pretty easy, that means I could have run faster. Next time, my friends. I didn’t run the first mile too fast, I ran the whole way up this MONSTER hill (passing a ton of people, I might add), and then picked up the pace during the last half of the race. I’ve been working on fast finishes, so I saw a bit of that paying off. I even beat The Engineer. That never happens. Well, he hasn’t been running as much as I have, so the second he puts in as much as me, it’s so long to ever finishing faster. Dang those guys with their ability to get in shape faster . . . Sigh. 🙂 This race was also part of the 5 by 5th Virtual Run Series on mommyrunfast.com (the last month!).
