I’m linking up with Courtney from Eat Pray Run DC, Cynthia from You Signed Up for WHAT?!, and Mar from Mar on the Run. This week’s Friday Five theme is Favorite Indoor Workouts.
I really like a lot of different types of exercise, so I thought I would share a few that I’ve been loving lately as I try to own the day every day.
- Body Pump. I’ve been going to pump classes for about a month and a half (I think), and I’ve fallen in love with it! It’s a great way to get started with weight training, and the class atmosphere is just fun and not intimidating at all. I’ve seen major results in my short experience with it, and I really recommend it to anyone looking to dive into more strength training.
- Yoga. Well, I just love yoga. It’s a great workout, especially Ashtanga or power yoga, and it’s a great way to work on your flexibility and your attitude. Yoga provides a way to slow down and focus on the moment with no judgment and to just be where you are.
- Treadmill. Yeah, I know. A lot of people hate the treadmill, but I don’t really, especially when I make my workout interesting. I like to warm up with 5 minutes walking and then move into my workout. Lately I’ve been doing shorter easy runs (30-40 minutes) and then picking up the speed by .1 mph each 30 seconds to one minute of the last 5 minutes before a 5-minute cool-down. Good stuff. It also helps that my favorite treadmill at the gym overlooks the pool, which distracts me from the feeling of not actually going anywhere. Nothing like watching older folks do Aqua Zumba, eh? 😉
- Swimming. I’m a fairly new swimmer, so my workouts aren’t anything crazy. I don’t have a tri on my schedule right now, so I haven’t been swimming a ton, but I do love it when I get to the pool. I swim for about 30 minutes and call it good. It’s short but effective since I’ve been trying to focus on form.
- Cycling/elliptical. I’ve been having trouble with my plantar fasciitis, so I’ve been interspersing cycling and elliptical into my training to cut down on my chance for injury. I just hop on the bike or elliptical crank up the resistance and go for 30-45 minutes. And the ellipticals at my gym have built-in TV, so it’s fun to watch The Chew or whatever while I’m plugging along. Good times.
Do you watch TV while you exercise?

Yes, watching Netflix and catching up on my shows is a must when I’m on the treadmill!
Love it! The treadmill is how I got started on Big Bang Theory. 🙂
We pretty much do all the same things. Except swimming…I can’t. I’m usually half watching a show at the gym while I’m on the treadmill. I usually have a podcast on or something, but I’m also reading the closed captions on the news or Bravo.

I learned how to swim a couple summers ago, and it’s really a great workout. I love podcasts! Jillian Michaels and Another Mother Runner are my favorites.

I try to watch tv while running on the treadmill, but I just can’t. It doesn’t keep me moving like music does. But when I walk on it, man, I love to watch Arrow or some stuff like that.

I’ve never seen Arrow, but I’ve heard good things! Music gets me moving faster, for sure. I can’t do TV on the treadmill, but I can on the elliptical.

After reading some great Friday Five posts today I am shocked to see how many of us actually like the treadmill! I thought I would be in the minority and it seems to be quite the opposite. I really need to get more familiar with the pool. Swimming is such great exercise!

I noticed that too! I was surprised. Seems like most of us would prefer outside but don’t exactly hate the ‘mill. I do love swimming!

That view from your favorite treadmill sounds interesting 🙂 the treadmills at my gym just look at the wall so I take advantage of Netflix on my IPad. I watched all of Gilmore Girls and am now working through Parenthood.

Yeah, Aqua Zumba is entertaining. It looks hard, though! I’ve been watching Gilmore Girls too. Good stuff.

I also have been having a hard time with my plantar fasciitis. It royally sucks!Been taking some time off of running this week due to it. I do love spin. That class always makes my heart rate going and end the class feeling like a million bucks!

Isn’t it the worst? So annoying. Spin is such a good workout. I haven’t been to class in a really long time. I need to get to one soon!

I just started swimming too! I got one of those training snorkels and fins so that I could work on form. About half of the swimmers at my gym use these and also hand paddles but I haven’t tried those. I don’t plan on doing a tri but I love the way swimming feels the day after my long run. I couldn’t put it on my list of favorites though because our pool is outdoors! Have a great weekend!!

I really need to get fins and paddles. I don’t have any, and the masters class uses them (and I’m not in the masters class yet). I’ve been using the pull buoy, though, and it’s really nice to use to work the upper body. I love swimming because it’s a low-impact workout but so good for you. Hope your weekend was great! 🙂
I still prefer to run outside but I’ve become BFFs with my treadmill this winter. Yes, I watch TV especially if it’s a long run.
Thanks for linking up with Fitness Friday! Have a wonderful weekend.

I definitely like to run outside better than on the treadmill, but watching shows is certainly a perk! 🙂
i don’t love the treadmill but on really bad weather days, i wish i had one at home!!
